Season 1 Rewatch: 1x06 "What We Owe To Each Other"

Hey everybody, it's week 6 of the rewatch, and I'm posting this a bit early as I'm out this afternoon. As usual, just watch the ep whenever you have time over the next few days, then come join the discussion in the comments below. (And if you're behind, feel free to catch up and add to the discussion at any time! :D)

Writer(s): Michael Schur (creator), Josh Siegel and Dylan Morgan
Director: Tucker Gates
Originally aired: 13 October 2016

Synopsis:
Eleanor is enlisted to help Michael with an important task that could determine her fate in the Good Place. Meanwhile, Chidi agrees to be the third wheel in an effort to help out his friend.

Memorable Quote:
Eleanor Shellstrop: What is it with you and frozen yogurt? Have you not heard of ice cream?
Michael: Oh, sure, but I've come to really like frozen yogurt. There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it.

CHIDI! Tagging along on the date with Jason and Tahani was hilarious. So awkward, but necessary. Him and Tahani clicking over Degas was interesting, and on my first watch, I was wondering were they each others soulmates (that didn't get matched because of Eleanor and Jason).

Eleanor's struggle really showed how much she grew, and quickly. I can imagine the demons laughing at all of this emotional angst/torture they created for these four.

Chidi and Tahani do have some chemistry, don't they? Not necessarily in a romantic or sexual sense, but they might have the most shared interests out of any pair in the core four.

Eleanor really has grown so much! I feel so proud of her.

They have great chemistry. I'd love to see more interaction between them tbh.

-I love how supportive Chidi is of Eleanor's sexy mailman decorating preferences. He is a true bro. And he took painting lessons as a kid, I had not remembered that at all! And his take on France as a colonialist invader as well as cultural center is just fantastic.

-Why do I have the feeling that Michael's fascination with the human concept of friendship is at least kind of real? It's also fun to realize, in hindsight, that Michael really has staked everything on this neighborhood, just not in the way that he says.

-I kind of love Chidi trying to be there for Jason even when it's agonizingly awkward, but I regret the implication that the Good Place doesn't do polyamorous triads. Chidi later on being there for Tahani too was excellent, though.

-I really love this exchange from Eleanor and Michael's montage of fun: "I didn't even want that thing. Why am I trying to win it?" "Because the machine says it's a prize." It's just a throwaway joke, but it's also genuinely insightful. Eleanor's canny cynicism strikes again!

-Michael's sadness hoodie was incredible.

-It's kind of funny that his entire torture plan for Eleanor was to corner her into needing to learn to be a better person... and yet he's utterly thrown when she actually does. I guess he really didn't believe that humans could change, did he?
