Not a spoiler, however, to say that under any circumstances I would believe that an extremely intelligent person working in a field where many people speak English....would be fluent in English. And one reason for Chidi's idiosyncratic way of speaking is that he is not only debating every word, but debating every word in a language that is not his first language.
